A two-day workshop for promoting sustainable urban mobility inaugurated at the hands of Mayor

Nagpur, August 28: Mayor Nanda Jichkar inaugurated a two-day workshop organized by NMC in collaboration with Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and European Union. The workshop is aimed at Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility in Nagpur.

Opposition Party Leader Tanaji Wanve, NMC Commissioner Virendra Singh, CEO of Nagpur Smart & Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd. (NSSCDCL)  Ramnath Sonawane, AFD Lead Transport Specialist Arnaud Dauphin, AFD Consultant Mathieu Arndt, AFD Deputy Director to India Clemence Vidal De La Blache, Senior Project Manager of European Union Delegation to India Smita Singh, AFD Grants Officer Jatin Arora, AFD Project Officer Rajnish Ahuja along with the officials of NIT, Maha Metro, NEERI and various other organizations were present for the inauguration ceremony.

“Nagpur is growing rapidly and it ranks first in the list of smart cities. Now, we are on the verge of making Sustainable Developments in the city and we have full work force for it. It Is of great pride to us that Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis and Minister of Road Transport & Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari both hail from Nagpur city and are constantly giving so much of their energy in developing the city," said Mayor Nanda Jichkar in her inaugural address.

NMC Commissioner Virendra Singh also said that, “Nagpur, being a geographical centre of India, already has a spatial advantage. Under ‘Mobilize Your City’ initiative AFD has chosen Nagpur and will support the technical cooperation activities in the city as a part of a worldwide programme. The Metro Project is taking shape rapidly and it's important that Nagpur citizens realise the importance of public transportation. So, it is important to spread awareness on a large scale. Also, this is a right time to invest money, time and technology in development of the city."

The welcome speech was given by AFD Lead Transport Specialist Arnaud Dauphin and Senior Project Manager of European Union Delegation to India Smita Singh. “The various developments that are going on in the city are really commendable and one can learn a lot from it," said Arnaud Dauphin. Smita Singh expressed her strong desires to transform Nagpur’s development into large scale development of the country in cooperation with AFD and European Union. 

Mathieu Arndt enlightened everyone about the concept of MYC through a presentation. Under the MYC initiative, officials also discussed the Dream Nagpur of 2030, issues that are being currently faced by the city and what developments will be made under this project. The attendees from various organizations also expressed their ideas on Nagpur in 2030. Mahesh Gupta of Maha Metro gave a presentation on International Urban Transport Policy. Participatory sessions on topics like road management, public transport, electronic facilities and future planning for city’s development were also conducted.

At the end of the first day of workshop, an overall summary of Road-map for MYC activities in Nagpur was given. CEO of Nagpur Smart & Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd. (NSSCDCL) Ramnath Sonawane concluded the first day of workshop by giving a vote of thanks to everyone present.

The concluding note was given by CEO NSSCDCL Ramnath Sonawane wherein he thanked AFD and its team, Maha Metro, NIT, NEERI and all the stakeholders for participating in the workshop.
